How to move a home gym
The most feared scenario for most of the home gym-owners…
My stepfather once told me this phrase, when I was a child. It stuck with me ever since and reminds me to commit to the things I do and to think twice about the actions I take.
In 2020, when the world got hit by this mysterious and insidious virus, I made a choice. It was a choice that changed my life. I created a homegym.
BLACKBOX 2.0
Looking for a new home in Germany, with the potential for a home gym is not easy – let me tell you that. It took us more than half a year to find the perfect rental house with this feature. Almost last minute we got our hands on, what turned out to be our new home. This time the gym had to be above ground, of course at least a little bigger than the previous one and with taller ceilings. We are super happy how it turned out and how it is clearly a step up, compared to BLACKBOX #1. And damn… that fresh air mid-workout hits different.
BLACKBOX #1
During the first lockdown of covid-19, gyms and training facilities completely shut down in Germany. As a competitive athlete, my biggest nightmare became reality. No team handball for the fist time in my life, drove me to Crossfit and made me fall in love with the sport.
I literally had to fullfill myself a live-long dream and build myself a homegym, to keep in shape. The 6.5-squaremetre-basement of my appartment in downtown Mannheim (later 13 squaremetres) had to be enough to get me through. It started as a temporary solution and ended up as an obsession. I began to create the gym of my dreams in the space I had available. The motto was „no space, no problem“ and I named my project „BLACKBOX Microgym“ („Schwarz“, my last name means black in german).
I documentet this journey on an instagram channel, wrote reviews, testet equipment, createt DIY-manuals, postet workouts and more to share my experience with like-minded folks (like you – THANK YOU for your support). The word spread fast and a little community formed around my tiny basementgym.
After a while, my neighbor “Armin” started showing up frequently and helped me with my DIY-Projects. He offered me to use his basement as well, which turned out to be the one right next to mine. So we took down the wall and there it was – double the space. Yep, there it was. More space. The only factor that kept me from going wild on even more equipment. So? I chose to go wild.
