Loadable olympic Dumbbell

Fixed vs adjustable

There is a big debate whether you should go for adjustable or regular dumbbells. We testet a loadable olympic dumbbell and here is what we thought:

First things first: “Adjustable dumbbells are more cost-effective and take much less space compared to regular dumbbells. Therefore, for people who want to save space and money in the long run, this is definitely the better option.”

Makes sense and sounds pretty obvious, doesn’t it? Well, not so fast. There are a lot more points to look at, such as the purpose of the dumbbell, the durability the product, the maximum weight and so on.

Look at your personal usecase

In our gym, we usually do CrossFit-style workouts so we went with fixed hex-dumbbells from the start. Hex-Dumbbells have the advantage, to be very durable. The ends are covered in rubber, what makes them nearly un-destroyable. You can drop them, toss them around and they will last. Their shape also makes them more versatile for different kinds of movements like for example devil presses.

The big downside of all kinds of fixed dumbbells is they are space inefficient and quite expensive if you want to have a full rack of them. And that’s where loadable dumbbells finally came into play for us.

The neolymp loadable olympic dumbbell

We went with a loadable olympic dumbbell from Neolymp, a pretty young German fitness company. Compared to other brands, their price is unbeatable (39,99€). It arrived before schedule and the service was on point.

The dumbbell is 508mm long, with 50mm diameter sleeves, to load the olympic plates. The Grip is 140mm wide, has a diameter of 25mm and has a knurled surface like a normal barbell. The dumbbell itself has a weight of 6kg/13lbs. It is basically a mini-barbell (which is super cute, don’t you think?).

If you want to use it like a standard dumbbell, you should probably only use change plates. Otherwise the big plates will have a negative impact on the range of motion of the movement (DB presses and so on).

Our resume

Other than power blocks, loadable olympic dumbbells are a very price-effective alternative to common fixed dumbbells – especially when you are already in possession of olympic plates and change plates.

Like in our case, when you are more CrossFit-focused, we would recommend to get a pair of fixed/hex dumbbells in the common benchmark weights. Like the RX-weights 22,5kg/50lbs and 15kg/35lbs or any other weight that you usually use for your workouts.
