Storage racks are a great way to save space in small home-, basement- or garage gyms. Most of the gym equipment manufacturers like rogue, suprfit, atx, kingsbox and so on have customizable versions to fit everyones needs. The flip side of those racks is the price. That’s why DIY-racks are a very popular solution in the home-, basement- and garage gym community.

But where do you start and what is there to think about? Here is how we built ours:

STEP 1: Plan your Design. Look at your gym, the space you want to put it and the purpose it should serve. Then make the blueprints and choose the appropriate wood for your rack.

STEP 1: Measure twice

STEP 2: Build a strong Frame. After you have chosen the approprate materials, start with building the frames for the shelves. We chose 6×10cm for the wood. The two longer pieces are 120cm long and the 3 shorter pieces 30cm. We used 12 screws for each frame. Each of the screws are 18cm long to make the frame as strong as possible.

STEP 2: A strong frame is key

STEP 3: Mount the shelves onto the frames. For this step we used 1cm thick plyo wood and six about 3-5cm long screws.

STEP 3: The shelves

STEP 4: Build the plate rack. The bottom shelve is meant to hold our bumper plates, so we mounted plastic rails to hold them in place. Here we used the same screwes like in step three.

STEP 4: Detail is king

STEP 5: Mount the posts. For this step we used 7x7cm and 120cm high wood posts. You can also use the other thickness of wood (in our case it was just sold out). Use the same 18cm screws like in step two. We used 4 screws per shelve and some extra metal corner pieces underneath for the ones hanging. Here we used the shorter screws again.

STEP 5: The posts

STEP 6: The Cover. This part is optional but good to protect the wood. We used our old rubber gym flooring and fixed it with glue and short screws.

STEP 6: Cover the wood

And there you go. Our advice: Don’t go cheap on screws.
